TAB ReviewTote Pools and 4,000 Venues Against App-Only Rivals
TAB gives Australian punters tote pools, Sky Racing vision and a retail network that app-only bookmakers cannot copy. We weighed what that is worth against pricing, the One Pool plan and the app.

Verdict: TAB is the only Australian operator with a national tote and a large retail network, plus live Sky Racing vision in a well-rated app. Its fixed-odds prices are rarely called the sharpest, and the One Pool merger is still bedding in. A good home for tote and exotic racing bets, but pair it with a sharper fixed-odds account.
Best for: Australian racing punters who value tote pools, venues and Sky vision
Visit siteMost Australian bookmakers are an app and a marketing budget. TAB is also a shop on the corner, a pub screen showing Sky Racing, and a pool system that pays you from other punters' money instead of a quoted price. That is a different product, and whether it is a better one depends on what you bet.
We could not open TAB's own site from our test machine (it returned a server error), so this review leans on the Australian App Store listing, Tabcorp's published results and press coverage. We say when a figure comes from a third party.
Tote versus fixed odds: the choice TAB forces on you
With a fixed-odds bet, the price on the slip is your return, whatever happens afterwards. With a tote bet, your winnings come from a shared pool after the operator takes its deduction, so you do not know the dividend until the pool closes. Reviewers cited in our search disagree about value. One says tote dividends often beat fixed prices dramatically on exotic bets like trifectas. Another says TAB's fixed-odds pricing is rarely the sharpest. A third puts the gap between tote and fixed at 15% to 20% on some races, which is why checking both is worth thirty seconds.
The trend is against tote. In 2000, roughly 85% of Australian racing turnover went through the tote, according to one report. Now fixed odds dominate, and a Tabcorp-cited figure puts tote pools shrinking about 5% to 6% a year. Smaller pools mean more volatile dividends, which is the problem Tabcorp is trying to fix.
One Pool: the national tote
For years Australia had three separate tote pools: NSW TAB, SuperTAB (Victoria, Western Australia, ACT) and UniTAB (Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Northern Territory). Tabcorp's plan is to merge them into a single national pool so that punters on the same race receive the same dividend. According to Before You Bet, live trials began on September 24, 2026, with a provisional launch window of October 3 and 4, subject to test results. We could not confirm that it went live on schedule, so check TAB's current notice.
The stated aim is larger pools, steadier prices and bigger jackpots. The same coverage points out that this does not guarantee better dividends. It improves stability, not the deduction.

The retail edge is real, but it is shrinking
Tabcorp's 2025 annual report describes TAB as reaching homes, about 4,000 retail venues and the app. That footprint is what an app-only bookmaker cannot copy. You can deposit and withdraw cash at a counter, bet with a person, and watch a race on a venue screen. For older punters and anyone uneasy with online banking, that is a genuine advantage.
The commercial picture is mixed. Tabcorp's FY25 Wagering and Media revenue was A$2,438.8 million, up 12.8%, and a new retail commercial model took effect on July 1, 2025. But in an October 2025 report, racing turnover was down 4% across 12 months while sport rose 5.3%. The customers are moving to screens.
The app, from the listing
The Australian App Store listing shows version 12.38.0, a 170 MB download and a 4.6 average from more than 187,000 ratings. That is a large sample for a bookmaker app. The features worth noting are all four Sky Racing channels for account holders, Sky Plus for US sports, same game multis, a My Offers tab and Venue Mode, which ties the app to a local TAB venue. The listing notes that some features, including Bets Friends and popular bets, are not available to South Australian residents.

Expert tips sit inside the betting flow, which is convenient and also a nudge. Treat a tip as another opinion, not a recommendation, and remember that a shared bet from a media name carries no better odds of winning than your own.

Who should use TAB
Use it if you bet exotics on Australian racing and want to compare tote with fixed prices, or if you value a venue network and cash handling. Pair it with a sharper fixed-odds bookmaker for the final price, since TAB is rarely cited as the best-priced option.
Skip it if you want one clean account with the lowest margins. We did not test deposits, withdrawals or support, and without that we would not make TAB a sole account.
