Sportsbet ReviewBig Racing and AFL Coverage, With a Winner-Limits Question
Sportsbet is Flutter's Australian bookmaker and the market leader by most accounts. We looked at what it offers on racing and AFL, how its app is rated, and the limits complaint that follows it.

Verdict: Sportsbet is the default Australian bookmaker for a reason: deep racing and AFL markets, a heavily rated app and frequent promotions. The catch is a widely repeated reputation for limiting consistent winners, so treat it as a place for recreational punts, not a long-term edge.
Best for: Recreational Australian punters who bet racing and AFL
Visit siteSportsbet sits at the top of the Australian market, and it behaves like it. The app is everywhere, the promotions never stop, and the racing page is built for people who bet several times a day. Whether that is a point in its favour depends on what you want from a bookmaker.
A note on method before the verdict. Sportsbet's own website returned an HTTP 403 to our automated browser, so we could not walk through its pages the way we did for other products. What follows rests on its App Store listing, published reviews, its Wikipedia entry and Flutter's reporting, and we say where each fact comes from. Treat numbers as of early November 2026 and check the live site.
Who owns it, and why that matters
Sportsbet is run by Sportsbet Pty Ltd and owned by Flutter Entertainment, the same group behind FanDuel, Paddy Power and Betfair. It holds a Northern Territory licence from the Northern Territory Racing Commission and takes bets from every Australian state. One comparison site describes it as the largest online operator in the country by revenue and active users, though it gives no percentage and we could not find an independent figure.
Ownership matters because Flutter manages risk at group level. That leads straight into the biggest question about the product.

Racing and AFL: where it is strong
Racing is the product's backbone. According to the comparison site we used, Sportsbet offers Best Tote and Best of Both Totes pricing plus ante-post markets. If you bet on thoroughbreds or greyhounds, that is the part to inspect: the ability to take the better of two totes is worth real money over a season.
For AFL, the markets go well beyond head to head. The same source lists prop markets, team specials, premiership futures and Brownlow Medal markets. NRL gets State of Origin specials and Dally M markets. The Same Game Multi lets you stack legs inside one match, and, as with every bookmaker's multi, the margin compounds with each leg. A four-leg multi priced by a book with a 5 percent margin per leg carries a much larger combined edge for the house than a single bet.
Flutter's own reporting, as covered by The Straight, says the racing market has been soft while sport, especially AFL and NRL during their seasons, has driven revenue growth. That fits what the app pushes hardest.
The app

We cannot open the logged-in app, but the store data is a fair proxy. On 7 November 2026 the Australian App Store showed 4.62 out of 5 from 184,995 ratings, with an update dated 20 October. Ratings that large are hard to game and tell you the app works for most people most of the time. They tell you nothing about prices.

Money in, money out
Credit cards are banned for gambling deposits in Australia, so expect debit, bank transfer or an e-wallet. The comparison site we read reports same-day PayPal withdrawals and one to three business days for bank transfers, with identity verification at the first withdrawal. Those are one site's figures, not a guarantee, and the verification step can add time.
The limits question
This is where the score drops. The same comparison site says Sportsbet has "a well-documented reputation for restricting winning users", particularly on racing and AFL or NRL, and that limits often arrive within weeks of consistent winning. We found no regulator ruling or independent study that measures this, so we present it as a widely repeated claim, not an established fact. Wikipedia's Sportsbet article also carries a controversies section that mentions a class action and regulator fines, which we did not verify in detail.
The practical reading is simple. If you bet small and for fun, none of this touches you. If you hope to grind a profit from price differences, you will probably meet a bookmaker that stops accepting your stakes, and an exchange or a sharp-priced book is the better route.

Verdict
Sportsbet earns a 6.9. It is the obvious choice for an Australian who bets on racing and AFL and wants the biggest market and the most polished app. It loses points because its promotions are built to keep you betting and because the winner-limits reputation is a real risk for anyone treating betting as income. Betting carries risk, odds are set so the house profits over time, and it is not a way to make money. If gambling is causing you harm, BetStop and the national helpline exist for a reason.
