PlayNow review: BC's only legal online casino, solid rules and a thin welcome offer

PlayNow is the only legal online casino in British Columbia, run by BCLC. We read its terms and tools to see whether a monopoly operator is good enough without competition.

6.6/10our score

PlayNow is a sound, plain option for British Columbia residents, and for most of them the only legal one. Its rules are published clearly, the weekly deposit limit is built in and increases wait 24 hours. It is weaker on bonuses, game counts and speed: allow up to three business days for withdrawals, and its welcome offers had expired when we looked.

PlayNow has one thing no rival can offer a British Columbia resident: it is the only legal online casino in the province. That is BCLC's own wording on the casino page, and it changes how you should judge the product. Most reviews ask whether a site beats its competitors. Here the question is narrower and more useful: is the monopoly operator good enough that you never feel the lack of a choice? Our desk read the help pages, terms and promotion listings, captured the live site and cross-checked independent write-ups, but no money moved. Where that limits a claim, the text says so.

One account for lotto tickets and slots

PlayNow started in 2004 as a lottery-ticket site and added casino games in July 2010, according to Wikipedia's history of the service. It is run by the British Columbia Lottery Corporation, a Crown corporation, so the money you lose goes to the province rather than to a listed operator. Whatever you think of that, it explains why the site feels less like a sales funnel than most commercial casinos. The home page spends as much room on lottery tickets and winning numbers as on slots.

The casino section is organised the way a land-based floor is: Slots, Blackjack, Jackpots, Instants, Tables, Free Spin Slots and Video Poker. BCLC says "hundreds" of games and gives no exact count, which is itself a flag. A library you can count tends to be advertised by number.

The progressive list on the casino page is short and recognisable: Cleopatra and Siberian Storm in the MegaJackpots network, two PowerBucks titles, Chain Reactors, Medusa II and a Bar-X pot. These are the games for people who want a jackpot that grows over months. Remember that progressive slots usually carry a lower base return than fixed-prize ones, because part of every bet funds the pot.

Live dealers, and a welcome offer that has expired

The live section is the part we would most like to have tested. The page we captured shows a looping video and a short menu, with demos and FAQs, but BCLC does not list table counts or stake ranges up front.

Promotions are where PlayNow is least impressive. On the day we looked, the page said new players could "sign up to get a welcome bonus", yet both listed casino welcome offers, a match deposit up to $1,500 and a $150 live-casino bonus, were marked expired on October 29, 2026. Active offers were a Friday-to-Sunday Mega Vault draw and Mystery Jackpots of up to $2,500, neither with wagering terms on the listing page. Read each promotion's own terms before opting in, and treat any bonus as a cost: matched money usually has to be wagered many times, and the house edge works against you the whole way.

Deposits, withdrawals and the rules that surprise people

PlayNow's help pages are unusually blunt about money, and that is a point in its favour.

  • Registration: you must be 19 or older and in British Columbia. Age and residency are checked against Equifax, which the help page says does not look at your credit history. It usually takes under five minutes.

  • Deposits: the minimum is $5. A weekly deposit limit can be set in $1 steps up to $100,000 on a rolling seven-day window. You can lower it any time; raising it takes about 24 hours.

  • Balance cap: $250,000. Go over and you have 72 hours to get back under, or BCLC starts a withdrawal for you.

  • Withdrawals: by electronic funds transfer to your bank account. BCLC asks you to allow up to three business days to process, then about one more for the bank. You also have to give your occupation before the first withdrawal.

  • Unused deposits: these cannot be withdrawn to a bank account. BCLC may refund them to the original payment method instead.

That last rule catches people out. If you deposit and change your mind, expect a refund process, not an instant cash-out. The three-day window is slower than the best US and Ontario operators, though not unusual for a provincial site.

Safer-gambling tools

Because the operator is a provincial Crown corporation, responsible-gambling tools are woven into the site rather than tucked in the footer. The weekly deposit limit is the main control, with a 24-hour delay on increases, which is a good design: it stops a bad night from becoming a bigger limit. Game Break is the self-exclusion program, and GameSense advisors can be reached at 1-877-706-6789 (7 AM to 12 AM Pacific, per BCLC) or through live chat. Gambling Support BC runs a free 24/7 line at 1-888-795-6111. The help page promises that Game Break refunds under $3,000 go to your bank automatically.

Who should use it

If you live in British Columbia and want legal, regulated casino play, PlayNow is the default and a sound one: clear rules, a weekly cap built into the product, and a regulator that watches BCLC itself. It will not win on game count, welcome offers or payout speed against operators in Ontario's open market. That is fine, because you cannot choose them from BC anyway.

Skip it if you want bonus value, a big live lobby or fast cash-outs. Remember the arithmetic that applies everywhere: every game has a house edge, so over time the casino wins and you lose. Play only with money you can afford to lose, set the weekly limit first, and use the GameSense line if play stops being fun.
