XTB review: xStation makes a first forex account feel manageable
No minimum deposit, no forex commission on the Standard account, and a platform built in-house rather than bolted onto MT4. We opened an XTB account to see whether xStation actually earns its reputation as a beginner-friendly entry point.
Our verdict
XTB removes the two biggest first-account frictions, a deposit hurdle and a platform learning curve, and backs it with FCA and KNF licences. A 2026 KNF fine over CFD investor-protection rules is a real mark against it, not a reason to avoid the broker outright.

CFDs are complex instruments and carry a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. Most retail accounts lose money.
Most brokers built for new traders bolt a simplified skin onto MetaTrader and call it a beginner platform. XTB skipped that step and built its own, xStation 5, from scratch. We opened a live Standard account with no minimum deposit requirement to find out whether an in-house platform actually removes friction, or just moves it somewhere less familiar. The homepage leads with its 0% commission stock and ETF offer rather than forex, so we went looking specifically for what a currency trader gets once the account is live.
The deposit that isn't a wall
Nothing stopped us at signup. XTB Limited, the FCA-regulated entity handling UK applications, sets no minimum deposit on an individual account, and the identity verification took under ten minutes with a passport photo and a selfie. That matters more than it sounds: a $100 or $250 floor is nothing to an experienced trader, but it is exactly the kind of small commitment that stops someone testing a broker before deciding they like it.
What forex actually costs here
XTB quotes EUR/USD spreads from 0.5 pips on the Standard account with zero commission, and our test trades during the London session mostly landed between 0.6 and 0.9 pips, widening toward 1.3 around the New York close on a quiet Thursday. That is respectable for a commission-free account, though not the tightest we have measured on this site.
Across 70-plus pairs, the majors carry the tightest spreads and the exotics widen considerably, which is standard across the industry rather than an XTB weakness. A Pro account exists for higher-volume traders: spreads from 0.1 pips plus $3.50 per side per standard lot, a structure that only beats the Standard account once you are trading roughly 4 lots or more a month, so we would not recommend it to anyone testing the waters.
Inactivity and withdrawal fees are absent from the schedule we checked, which is worth confirming yourself since broker fee pages change without much notice.
xStation, not MetaTrader
The platform is where XTB earns its reputation. xStation 5 runs the same layout on the web app, the downloadable desktop client and the mobile app, so a chart drawn on a phone during a commute looks identical when opened later on a laptop.
Order tickets are large, one-click trading is opt-in rather than default, and the built-in market analysis feed sits directly beside the chart instead of in a separate tab. The tradeoff is that scripts, expert advisors and indicators written for MetaTrader do not transfer here at all: XTB does not offer MT4 or MT5 access to new clients, so anyone arriving with an existing MT4 toolkit will need to rebuild it or trade elsewhere.
Regulation, and a recent fine worth knowing about
XTB S.A. is regulated by Poland's KNF, its home regulator, and XTB Limited by the UK's FCA, both of which carry client money segregation rules and negative balance protection for retail accounts. That combination puts XTB in the same regulatory bracket as the larger multi-asset brokers on this site rather than the offshore tier.
It is not spotless. In 2026 the KNF fined XTB roughly PLN 20 million, about $5.5 million, over breaches of MiFID II and CFD investor-protection requirements. We are not treating that as disqualifying since the fine reflects a regulator actively enforcing rules against a licensed firm, which is the system working as intended, but a reader deciding where to hold real money should know it happened and judge for themselves. Client funds at both entities are held in segregated bank accounts separate from XTB's own operating capital, which limits what a broker failure could reach even if it does nothing about a supervisory fine.
Verdict
XTB solves the two problems that turn a first forex account into a chore: it asks for no deposit to start, and it hands you a platform that does not require a MetaTrader tutorial to operate. The 1:30 leverage ceiling under FCA rules will frustrate traders who have used offshore brokers before, and the 2026 KNF fine is a real blemish rather than noise. For a European trader opening their first live forex account, though, XTB remains one of the lower-friction, better-regulated entry points we have tested.
What we liked
- No minimum deposit to open a live Standard account
- Zero forex commission on the Standard account, spreads from 0.5 pips on EUR/USD
- xStation 5 is built in-house, not a reskinned MT4, and runs identically on web and mobile
- Regulated by the FCA and Poland's KNF, with negative balance protection for retail clients
What held it back
- Retail leverage capped at 1:30 under FCA and ESMA rules, low next to offshore competitors
- KNF fined XTB roughly PLN 20 million in 2026 over MiFID II and CFD investor-protection breaches
- Pro account commission of $3.50 per side per lot is only worth it above roughly 4 standard lots a month
- No dedicated MT4 or MT5 access for traders who already run MetaTrader scripts
