Crypto Tax SoftwareReview
TokenTax review: when does the $3,499 VIP plan make sense?
We compared TokenTax's software-only plans against its accountant-led VIP tier to work out where a DIY crypto tax tool stops being enough and a human preparer earns their much higher fee.
Our verdict
TokenTax's DIY plans are priced above rivals like Koinly for similar reconciliation work, but its VIP tier buys something those tools do not sell at all: a human CPA team that reconciles the mess and files the return, which is worth $3,499 only if your tax year is genuinely too complicated to trust software alone.
Best for: DeFi-heavy or high-net-worth filers who want an accountant to finish the job, not just software to start it
- Price
- $49 to $3,499 per tax year
- Made by
- TokenTax

What we liked
- VIP tier includes two 30-minute consultations with a tax expert and a reconciliation specialist working the data by hand
- One-click export to TurboTax, H&R Block and TaxAct saves a manual re-entry step at filing time
- Handles staking, LP positions, bridges, mints and other DeFi activity that trips up simpler tax tools
- 100+ integrations cover exchanges, wallets and blockchains without manual CSV wrangling in most cases
What held it back
- Basic plan caps at 100 transactions for $49, a low ceiling next to competitors' free or cheaper starter tiers
- Pro plan jumps to $1,999 for 20,000 transactions, a steep step up from Premium's $199
- VIP at $3,499 is a serious annual cost before any add-on full return filing fee
- Full tax return filing is a separate add-on even at the VIP tier, not included in the base price
Filing crypto taxes with a hundred DeFi transactions and a filing crypto taxes with thirty thousand exchange trades are not the same job, and TokenTax prices them almost seventy times apart: $49 at the bottom, $3,499 at the top. We ran a small test import through the Basic tier and read through what the VIP plan promises to work out where that gap is actually earned.
Five tiers, one big jump
TokenTax's five plans are Basic ($49), Premium ($199), Pro ($1,999), VIP ($3,499) and a custom Enterprise tier. Transaction limits climb from 100 on Basic to 5,000 on Premium, 20,000 on Pro and 30,000 centralized-exchange transactions on VIP. The jump from Premium to Pro is the one that will surprise a lot of buyers: a tenfold price increase for a fourfold rise in transaction ceiling, which only makes sense if the manual DeFi and NFT handling on Pro is doing real work behind the scenes rather than just raising a number.

What the software actually catches
We ran a small CSV import through the Basic tier to see whether the DeFi handling TokenTax advertises shows up in practice, not just on the marketing page. Staking rewards and a liquidity pool exit both categorized correctly on the first pass, which is more than some cheaper tax tools manage without manual correction. TokenTax's own materials claim support for bridges, mints and royalty income too, categories that trip up flatter, exchange-only import tools.

The software side alone competes on features with Koinly and CoinLedger, both of which this site has already reviewed, but TokenTax's Basic and Premium prices sit above those competitors' comparable tiers. If all you need is software, that price gap is a real mark against TokenTax, not a rounding error.
Enterprise sits above VIP for businesses and funds with custom cross-chain needs, priced individually rather than published on the site. We did not test it, since it requires a sales conversation rather than a self-serve signup, but it exists mainly so a crypto business does not have to negotiate a bespoke deal disguised as a consumer tax plan.
VIP: paying for a person, not a feature
VIP is where TokenTax stops being just software. At $3,499 a year, it assigns a reconciliation specialist to work through your data by hand, covering missing cost basis, dead exchanges and cross-chain activity that automated matching cannot always untangle on its own, plus two 30-minute consultations with a tax expert. A full return filing is still a separate add-on, not bundled into that price, which is worth knowing before you budget for VIP expecting a finished 1040.
