OKX review: a strong exchange for traders the US locks out entirely
OKX pairs low base fees with a self-custodial wallet supporting over 130 chains, a combination few rivals match. We checked its fee tiers, tested the built-in wallet and confirmed exactly who OKX will and will not let sign up.
Our verdict
OKX is one of the stronger all-in-one platforms outside the United States: 0.08 percent maker spot fees at the base tier, a self-custodial wallet spanning more than 130 chains, and deep derivatives and bot tools in one account. The catch is availability. The global site blocks the US, Canada, Hong Kong, India and several other markets outright, and traders in those regions are pushed toward a more limited OKX US entity or a different exchange entirely.
Best for: Traders outside the US and its blocked markets who want spot, derivatives and a multi-chain wallet under one login

What we liked
- Base spot fees of 0.08 percent maker and 0.10 percent taker undercut many large rivals
- Built-in wallet spans over 130 chains without needing a separate browser extension
- Deep product range in one account: spot, futures, options, bots and P2P
- VIP fee tiers scale down further with 30-day trading volume for active traders
What held it back
- The global platform blocks the US entirely, along with Canada, Hong Kong and India
- US residents are routed to OKX US, a separate entity with a narrower product list
- Perpetuals carry their own 0.02 percent maker and 0.05 percent taker schedule to track separately
- The breadth of products means a genuine learning curve for anyone coming from a simple app
OKX wants to be the one account that covers spot, derivatives, bots and a self-custodial wallet, and for most of the world outside a short blocklist, it mostly is.
The fee schedule, and why it changed in April
OKX's base tier charges 0.08 percent on maker spot orders and 0.10 percent on taker orders, a rate that beats several large competitors before anyone opens a VIP tier. Perpetual futures run a separate schedule, 0.02 percent maker and 0.05 percent taker at the base level, and OKX adjusted several VIP brackets on April 8, 2026, so an account that qualified for a discount earlier in the year is worth rechecking against the current table rather than assuming it still applies. Fee level is set by either your 30-day trading volume or the assets you hold on the platform, whichever gets you the better rate, and the site's own fee page walks through both paths in detail rather than hiding the calculation behind a support ticket.

The wallet is the part that surprised us
We expected the built-in OKX Wallet to be a thin bridge to the exchange's own chains. It is not. The wallet natively supports more than 130 blockchains, with DeFi swaps, NFT tools and cross-chain bridging built in, so testing DeFi on a network the exchange itself does not list still worked without installing a separate extension. That single detail is what separates OKX from exchanges that treat self-custody as an afterthought bolted onto the main app: here it is a first-class product with its own portfolio view and its own market and meme-coin discovery tools.

Spot trading, seen live
Pulling up the BTC/USDT order book on a random afternoon showed a price of roughly 84,866 dollars with a 24-hour volume above 805 thousand USDT on that single pair, moving averages plotted alongside the candles without any lag we could detect. None of that is unusual for a top-tier exchange, but it confirms the depth claim is not just marketing: the order book had enough size on both sides that a moderate market order would not have moved the price meaningfully, which matters more to an active trader than any headline fee number.
