NinjaTrader review: forex through futures, not a dealing desk
NinjaTrader has no spot forex account. What it has is nine currency futures contracts, cleared on CME alongside its stock index and commodity futures, and we checked whether that setup actually replaces a separate forex broker for a US-based futures trader.
Our verdict
NinjaTrader does not sell spot forex, and a trader arriving expecting a retail FX account will not find one. What it sells instead is nine CME currency futures contracts, from full-size 6E Euro FX down to micro M6E, cleared through the same NFA-regulated account as its stock index and single-stock futures. That works well for a futures trader who wants FX exposure without a second broker, and the free license plan with $50 micro day margins keeps the entry cost low. It is a poor fit for anyone who actually wanted 24 hour spot forex quotes, a demo built around currency pairs, or leverage anywhere near what a retail forex account offers.
Best for US futures traders who want currency exposure inside the same NFA-regulated account, not spot forex traders

CFDs are complex instruments and carry a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. Most retail accounts lose money.
We came to NinjaTrader looking for a forex account and found none. What we found instead, after digging through its pricing and margin pages, was nine currency futures contracts sitting in the same account as its stock index and single-stock futures, and that distinction changes almost everything about who this platform actually suits.
There is no spot forex account here
Search NinjaTrader's site for "forex" and the closest match is a set of CME-listed currency futures: 6A (Australian dollar), 6B (British pound), 6C (Canadian dollar), 6E (Euro), 6J (Japanese yen), 6L (Brazilian real), 6M (Mexican peso), 6N (New Zealand dollar) and 6S (Swiss franc), each also available in a smaller micro version. A retail spot forex trader expecting 24 hour quotes on EUR/USD with no fixed contract size or expiry date will not find that product here. What exists instead is exchange-cleared, standardized, and settled the same way any other futures contract is.
Micro contracts make the entry cost reasonable
The micro version of Euro FX, M6E, carries a day trading margin of $50 and an initial margin near $231 on NinjaTrader's own table, a fraction of the roughly $2,640 initial margin the full-size 6E contract demands. For a futures trader who already holds an account here for index or commodity trading, adding a micro currency position costs less capital than opening and funding a separate forex broker. The tradeoff is that a micro contract still moves in fixed lot sizes and expires on a set date, unlike a spot position that can be opened and closed at any size, any time.
Three license tiers change the real cost of trading
NinjaTrader's platform itself is free to use, but the commission per contract depends on which of three plans a trader picks. The free plan charges $1.29 per side on a standard contract and $0.39 on a micro. Paying $99 a month drops that to $0.99 and $0.29. A one-time $1,499 lifetime licence cuts it further, to $0.59 per side on standard contracts and just $0.09 on micros. A trader running frequent micro currency futures trades will recover that lifetime fee faster than someone trading occasionally, and the free tier remains the sensible starting point until a trader's own volume justifies the upgrade.
Regulation sits with the futures side, not a forex dealing desk
NinjaTrader Clearing, LLC operates as a CFTC-registered futures commission merchant and NFA member, the same regulatory structure covering any US futures broker, rather than the retail forex dealer model that governs spot FX brokers domestically. That matters for a US-based trader: retail spot forex in the US is already restricted to a handful of NFA-registered dealers offering low leverage, so routing currency exposure through regulated futures instead is not a downgrade, just a different structure with its own margin and expiry rules to learn.
The costs that show up after the trade
Outside of commissions and margin, NinjaTrader charges a $30 fee on wire withdrawals and a $35 monthly inactivity charge once an account sits idle for 30 days. Neither is unusual for a futures broker, but a trader coming from a spot forex background where free withdrawals are standard should budget for it. ACH transfers stay free and typically settle within one to three days, which we'd recommend as the default funding method over wire unless speed matters more than the fee. A debit card deposit lands faster still, close to instant in our own test transfer, though it is not the cheapest route if a bank charges its own cash advance fee on the card used.
NinjaTrader was folded into Kraken's parent company Payward in 2025, a detail visible right on the homepage logo lockup now reading "NinjaTrader by Payward." That ownership change has not altered the futures-only product we tested, but it is worth knowing for anyone assuming NinjaTrader might add crypto spot trading or forex on the back of a crypto exchange owner. Nothing in its current pricing or margin pages suggests that expansion is imminent.
Our verdict
NinjaTrader is a strong, low-cost futures broker that happens to offer currency exposure, not a forex broker with a futures side attached. A trader already trading stock index or commodity futures here gains real convenience from adding M6E or another micro currency contract to the same account, at a $50 day margin the free plan supports without any monthly cost. A trader who actually wants spot forex, variable position sizing, or a currency-focused platform experience should treat this as the wrong product entirely and look at a dedicated forex broker instead.
