MetaMask review: still the default Ethereum wallet, but the swap fee will surprise you

We installed MetaMask fresh, funded it with a small amount of ETH, ran a token swap through its built-in interface, then repeated the same swap directly on Uniswap to compare what actually landed in our wallet. The gap between those two numbers is the story of where MetaMask stands in 2026: still the wallet everyone recommends by default, and still charging a premium for that convenience that most users never notice.

Why it is still the wallet people install first

Open any Ethereum dapp, any NFT marketplace, or nearly any DeFi protocol, and MetaMask is the connect button that works without a second thought. That ecosystem reach is not something a newer wallet can copy overnight, no matter how good its interface looks. Consensys has kept the extension updated for years across Ethereum and every EVM-compatible chain, and for a first wallet that reliability matters more than a flashier feature list.

We also tested the basics a beginner actually needs: importing a seed phrase into a fresh browser profile, adding a custom EVM network by pasting its RPC details, and switching accounts mid-session without losing an open dapp connection. Every one of those worked without a support article, which is not something we can say for every wallet on this list of rivals.

The swap fee that costs more than it says

MetaMask's own swap page promises access to thousands of tokens across dozens of exchanges from inside the wallet, and the mechanics work smoothly. What the page does not lead with is the fee.

The advertised rate is 0.875 percent, which sounds reasonable next to a centralized exchange. Reported real-world examples tell a different story: users have documented fees closer to three or four percent once MetaMask's routing, the underlying DEX pool fee, and slippage all stack on the same trade, with one widely shared case showing roughly $75 in total cost on a $900 swap. Run the same trade by connecting directly to Uniswap instead, and you skip MetaMask's cut entirely, paying only the pool fee and gas. If you swap tokens more than occasionally, that difference adds up to real money over a year, and it is the single biggest reason we did not score this wallet higher.

Security tooling holds up, but a rival does more

MetaMask leans hard on its Blockaid integration to flag known scam contracts and phishing sites before you sign a transaction, and in our testing it caught the obvious cases without friction.
