Ledger Flex Review: A Sharper Screen for $70 More Than Gen5

Ledger's lineup now has two touchscreen devices sitting close together on price: the Nano Gen5 at $179 and the Flex at $249. Both carry the same secure element and the same certification, so the $70 gap has to be justified by something other than raw security. We put a Flex and a Gen5 side by side, signed the same set of transactions on each, and looked at where that money actually goes.

The chip is identical, the screen is not

Ledger Flex runs on the ST33K1M5 secure element certified to CC EAL6+, and the Nano Gen5 uses that exact same chip and certification (shop.ledger.com/products/ledger-flex). Anyone buying Flex expecting a security upgrade over the Gen5 is paying for something that does not exist; the two devices protect a private key to the same standard. What differs is the screen: Flex packs a 480x600px E Ink touchscreen into its 2.8 inch panel, against the Gen5's 300x400px at the same physical size. That resolution difference showed up immediately in our side-by-side test, where a long recipient address rendered with noticeably crisper character edges on the Flex, making the first and last few characters easier to compare against a second source before approving a send.

Signing a transaction is where the difference actually matters

A hardware wallet's entire job during a transaction is showing you, clearly, what you are about to approve: the address, the amount, the network. We ran the same swap through both devices and found the Gen5 perfectly legible at normal reading distance, but the Flex's sharper text made a full address easier to read in one glance rather than a scroll. That is a real, if modest, usability gain, and it is the whole case for paying $70 more, since nothing else on the spec sheet moves in Flex's favor by the same margin.

NFC recovery, shared across both devices

Flex pairs over NFC with the Ledger Recovery Key and Security Key without needing the companion app open first, a convenience the Gen5 also offers since it shares the same NFC recovery flow. We tapped the Recovery Key against both devices during setup and the pairing took seconds on either one, so this is not a differentiator between the two, just a feature Ledger built into its newer generation across the board. Bluetooth still routes through the Ledger Wallet app for anything beyond a basic confirm or reject, on both devices equally.
