Gemini Review: Compliance You Can Check, Fees You'll Notice
We opened a Gemini account, checked its ActiveTrader fee schedule against Kraken and Coinbase, counted its coin list against theirs and read through Gemini's NYDFS trust charter and $125 million insurance policy to see if the compliance record justifies paying more per trade.
Our verdict
Gemini's ActiveTrader base tier charges 0.60% maker and 1.20% taker, double Coinbase Advanced's 0.40%/0.60% base and well above Kraken Pro's 0.40%/0.80%, and its coin list of roughly 90 assets is the smallest of the three. What that fee premium buys is a New York trust charter, $125 million in insurance and a clean decade-plus security record, real assurances for a compliance-conscious trader, not a marketing line.
Best for: US-based traders who prioritize regulatory oversight and insured custody over the lowest fee and the widest coin list

What we liked
- New York Department of Financial Services trust charter puts Gemini under active regulatory oversight, not just self-attestation
- $125 million in digital-asset insurance, split between hot wallet and cold storage coverage
- SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certifications back the security claims with third-party audits
- No reported customer fund loss from a breach in over a decade of operation
What held it back
- ActiveTrader's 0.60% maker and 1.20% taker base fees run well above Kraken Pro's 0.40%/0.80%
- Around 90 supported cryptocurrencies, fewer than Kraken's 600+ and Coinbase's roughly 550
- Gemini Mode's convenience fee is folded into a spread rather than shown as one clear percentage
- The stricter compliance posture means slower listings and more documentation at signup than looser competitors
We opened a Gemini account, ran a set of trades through the ActiveTrader interface and checked the fee receipts against what we've paid on Kraken and Coinbase for the same order sizes. Gemini has spent a decade building a reputation as the compliance-first exchange among the three, and we wanted to know whether that reputation shows up as anything beyond a higher bill.
The fee gap is real and it is not small
Gemini's ActiveTrader base tier charges 0.60% maker and 1.20% taker, dropping only as far as 0.075% maker and 0.15% taker once you clear the highest volume brackets (coinbureau.com/review/gemini). Kraken Pro starts its base tier at 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker, and Coinbase Advanced Trade opens even lower at 0.40%/0.60%. On a $5,000 trade at base rates, that gap between Gemini's taker fee and Coinbase's costs an extra $30, a difference that compounds fast for anyone trading more than occasionally. Gemini Mode, the simple consumer interface, folds its cost into a spread rather than a stated percentage, which makes a direct comparison harder but does not make the cost smaller.

What the extra fee is actually paying for
Gemini operates as a New York limited-purpose trust company under a charter from the New York State Department of Financial Services, a regulatory structure Kraken and most offshore-first exchanges do not carry. That charter means Gemini answers to an active state regulator rather than relying purely on self-reported compliance, and it backs custody with $125 million in digital-asset insurance, split between $25 million for hot wallet assets and $100 million for cold storage (coinbureau.com/review/gemini). SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certifications mean outside auditors, not just Gemini's own marketing team, have reviewed the security controls behind those claims.

We read through the certification summaries rather than taking the claim at face value, and the audit scope covers the custody and access-control systems that matter most for a customer's funds. No exchange's insurance policy covers every scenario, and Gemini's own disclosures note exclusions, so treat the $125 million figure as a real backstop, not a guarantee that covers any possible loss.
