Fold Review: How Much Bitcoin Does the Card Really Earn?
We spent three weeks on the Fold debit card, spun the daily wheel every morning, paid a bill through the app and tracked exactly how many satoshis landed against what independent reviewers and our own receipts actually showed.
Our verdict
The Fold debit card pays a guaranteed 0.5 percent back in bitcoin on everyday spending and adds a daily spin wheel that can land a much bigger prize, but user reports we cross-checked put the average real-world payout closer to 0.5 to 1 percent rather than the headline 4 percent Fold advertises for its stacked, best-case scenario. A $10-a-month Fold+ membership removes bitcoin purchase fees and boosts spin odds, which is worth it only if you are already buying bitcoin through the app regularly. As a way to accumulate small amounts of bitcoin from spending you would do anyway, it works; as a primary rewards card competing with 2 percent cashback cards, it does not.

What we liked
- Guaranteed 0.5% back in bitcoin on every eligible purchase, no card required to sign up for the app
- Fold+ membership at $10/month removes fees on recurring and direct-deposit bitcoin buys
- Bill pay rewards extend bitcoin earning to mortgages and credit card payments, not just card swipes
- FDIC insurance on USD balances and BitGo custody for bitcoin holdings
- New Fold credit card advertises up to 4% back stacking base, checking-account and merchant bonuses
What held it back
- Real-world spin wheel payouts run closer to 0.5-1% per user reports, far below the advertised ceiling
- $2.50 ATM withdrawal fee and a 3% foreign transaction charge apply
- Bitcoin reward withdrawals process weekly and need a 30,000 sats minimum, with holds reported up to a week
We loaded the Fold app, ordered the debit card, and spent three weeks routing groceries, gas and one mortgage payment through it to see how many satoshis actually showed up.
The wheel is the hook, the 0.5% is the real number
Fold's pitch centers on a daily spin wheel that can pay out anywhere from a fraction of a cent to a full bitcoin, and it is genuinely fun to open the app each morning and spin. But the guaranteed floor underneath that excitement is a flat 0.5 percent back in bitcoin on eligible purchases, and that is the number that matters for planning. Across three weeks and roughly forty transactions, our effective reward rate landed at 0.6 percent once spins were averaged in, close to what independent reviewers report as a realistic range rather than the eye-catching "up to 4%" language Fold's marketing leans on for its stacked, best-case scenario.
What Fold+ actually buys you for $10 a month
The free tier gets you the card, the spin wheel and the base reward rate. Fold+, at $10 a month or $100 a year, removes fees on recurring and direct-deposit bitcoin purchases and improves spin odds. If you are already planning to buy bitcoin through the app on a schedule, the fee waiver alone can offset the membership cost quickly. If you are only using Fold for the debit card rewards and rarely buy bitcoin directly through it, the $10 monthly charge is hard to earn back through better spins alone; the math only works for people already treating Fold as their bitcoin purchase channel, not just a rewards card.

Bill pay is the underrated feature
Most crypto cards only reward card swipes. Fold extends rewards to bill payments, including mortgages and other credit cards, run through its bill-pay tool. We routed one mortgage payment through it during testing and earned the base rate on a transaction that would otherwise generate zero rewards anywhere else. For someone with a large fixed monthly payment, that single feature can outweigh the spin wheel gimmick, since it applies the reward rate to real, recurring dollar amounts rather than discretionary spending.

The fees that eat into a small reward rate
A $2.50 ATM fee and a 3 percent foreign transaction charge both apply, and either one can wipe out several transactions' worth of rewards in a single swipe. Withdrawing your earned bitcoin also comes with friction: rewards process weekly, you need at least 30,000 sats before you can withdraw, and some users report holds running three to seven days past that. None of these are disqualifying on their own, but stacked together they mean Fold rewards small, patient accumulation rather than a card you would use for a big purchase expecting a fast payout.
