Cryptohopper Review: Can a Beginner Actually Trade Without Losing?
Cryptohopper's free plan only trades manually; running an actual bot starts at $29 a month. We bought a marketplace strategy, backtested it, then paper traded it to see how much of the backtest survives contact with live prices.
Our verdict
Cryptohopper's drag-and-drop strategy builder and marketplace really do let someone with no coding background launch an automated bot in an afternoon. What the free plan does not tell you upfront is that automated trading itself requires a paid subscription starting at $29 a month, and that a marketplace strategy's shiny backtest is not a promise of future profit, several buyers have reported strategies losing money once real fees and slippage entered the picture. Treat it as a serious tool that still requires oversight, not a set-and-forget income source.
Best for: Traders comfortable connecting exchange API keys who want to test and automate simple strategies without writing code
- Price
- Free (manual only); bots from $29/mo

What we liked
- Strategy builder and marketplace let a non-programmer launch a bot without writing any code
- 5,000 to unlimited monthly backtests depending on plan, so a strategy can be checked against history before risking money
- Paper trading bot included alongside any paid plan to test live market conditions without real funds
- Connects to 12+ exchanges including Binance, Kraken, Coinbase, KuCoin and OKX from one dashboard
What held it back
- Automated trading is locked behind a paid plan; the free tier only allows manual trading
- Marketplace strategy backtests are not a guarantee, several buyers report losses despite strong historical results
- Adventurer ($69) and Hero ($129) gate API access and Algorithmic Intelligence behind higher tiers
- Poorly chosen marketplace templates and delayed affiliate payouts are recurring user complaints
Cryptohopper's homepage promises a bot that trades so you don't have to think about it, and the free plan looks like the way to try that out. It isn't. The free tier lets you connect an exchange and trade manually, watch your portfolio, and browse the marketplace, but the actual automated bot, the thing that makes Cryptohopper a bot platform rather than a portfolio dashboard, only turns on once you are paying at least $29 a month for Explorer.
Setting up a strategy without writing a line of code
We built a simple strategy from scratch using the drag-and-drop config tool: pick indicators like RSI and moving average crossovers, set buy and sell conditions, choose position sizing, and save. No part of this required programming knowledge, and the interface explains each indicator in plain language as you add it. For anyone who has wanted to automate a simple rules-based approach without learning Python, this genuinely delivers.

Rather than build everything ourselves, we also bought a mid-priced strategy from the marketplace, where templates range from under $15 to nearly $90 as one-time or recurring purchases.
What the marketplace actually sells you
The Marketplace is where Cryptohopper's most-repeated complaint comes from. Editor's Picks and top-rated templates show polished backtest charts, but a backtest run against historical data is not the same as a live strategy surviving current volatility, spread and exchange fees.

We ran our purchased strategy through 5,000 backtests included on the Explorer plan, and it showed a respectable historical win rate. Running the same strategy as a live paper trade for two weeks produced a noticeably flatter result once real order execution and fee drag were factored in, a gap that matches what other users report after buying a highly rated marketplace strategy expecting the same numbers to repeat. Some accounts online describe losing hundreds of dollars in hours after chasing premium settings a template did not actually deliver on.
Where the real risk sits
None of Cryptohopper's tiers protect you from a bad strategy; they only unlock more bots and more backtests to test one. A bot connected to your exchange via API key will execute exactly what it's told, including a string of losing trades if market conditions shift away from what the strategy assumes. Stop-loss and trailing settings exist and are worth configuring on any live bot, but they are settings you have to set correctly yourself, not a safety net Cryptohopper applies for you. Anyone putting real money behind an automated strategy should size positions as if the strategy could be wrong, because eventually it will be.
