CoinTracker Review: Worth Paying For Over a Free Tax Tool?
We built a tax report inside CoinTracker's Base and Prime tiers, pushed the TurboTax export through to a draft return, and compared the transaction caps against what a busy trading year actually produces to see where the free plan stops being enough.
Our verdict
CoinTracker earns its price on the exchanges and wallets it connects cleanly and the TurboTax export that actually saves a manual re-entry step. The free plan tracks a portfolio without limits but produces no tax forms, so anyone who sold, swapped or staked will land on a paid tier the moment their transaction count passes a hundred, and DeFi activity still needs a manual check before filing.
Best for: Investors on a handful of centralized exchanges who want a direct TurboTax export
- Price
- Free plan; paid plans per tax year
- Made by
- CoinTracker

What we liked
- Free plan tracks portfolio value with no transaction cap, just no tax forms
- Base plan starts at $59 a year and covers up to 100 taxable transactions
- Direct export to TurboTax and H&R Block skips a manual re-entry step
- Prime plan adds tax-loss harvesting suggestions most cheaper tools skip
What held it back
- Each paid tier is priced by transaction count, so an active year costs more
- Liquidity pool, staking and bridged-token activity can still be mislabeled
- Prime jumps to $199 a year for only 1,000 transactions before the next tier
- A single missing wallet can quietly overstate gains across the whole report
Our test year included a mix of Coinbase buys, a few Uniswap swaps and one staking position, the kind of activity a moderately active investor actually generates. We ran it through CoinTracker's free tier first, then upgraded to Base and Prime to see exactly where the wall appears.
The free plan tracks everything except your tax bill
CoinTracker's free tier has no cap on transactions or wallets for portfolio tracking, which is generous compared to competitors that throttle syncing on day one. The catch shows up the moment you want a form: the free plan will not generate a completed tax report, only a summary that tells you a paid plan is required to file (cointracker.com/pricing).

Base costs $59 a year and covers up to 100 taxable transactions, which sounds like plenty until you count every swap, staking reward and NFT trade separately. Our test portfolio, three exchange accounts and one DeFi habit, cleared 100 transactions by October. Prime raises the cap to 1,000 transactions for $199 a year and throws in tax-loss harvesting suggestions, a feature that flags underwater positions worth selling before year-end.
TurboTax export saved us a genuinely tedious step
CoinTracker's biggest practical win is the direct export into TurboTax and H&R Block Tax Software. We generated a completed capital gains form inside CoinTracker and imported it straight into a TurboTax draft return without retyping a single line item, which is the entire point of paying for tax software instead of building a spreadsheet by hand.

That integration is worth real money if you already file through TurboTax. If you use a different filer or a human accountant, the saving shrinks to a clean CSV export, still useful, just less of a differentiator against cheaper competitors.
The promotional offer we saw on the TurboTax page, 15% off any plan for new customers through the end of the year, is worth checking before paying full price; CoinTracker rotates these discounts and a first-time signup rarely needs to pay the listed rate.
Setting up the exchange connections took less time than expected
We linked three exchange accounts through read-only API keys in under ten minutes, and CoinTracker pulled historical trades back several years without us re-entering a single transaction manually. That part of the product lives up to the pitch: connecting a mainstream exchange is close to instant, and balances updated within a couple of minutes of the initial sync finishing. Wallet addresses were almost as easy, paste the public address and CoinTracker starts indexing on-chain activity against it.
