CoinMarketCap review: still useful, but remember who owns it
CoinMarketCap remains the most-cited price and ranking source in crypto, free and covering tens of millions of tokens. Binance has owned it since 2020, so we checked how that ownership sits against CoinGecko's independence before trusting either one blindly.
Our verdict
CoinMarketCap earns its default status honestly: free access to millions of tracked coins, live data on nearly a thousand exchanges, and a rankings page most of the industry still checks first. What it cannot shake is the fact that Binance has owned the company outright since a 2020 acquisition, and both firms insist rankings run independently of that relationship. CoinGecko's Trust Score methodology and lack of exchange ownership make it the more comfortable second opinion, not a full replacement.

What we liked
- Free access to price, volume and ranking data across more than 900 exchanges
- Coin and exchange pages update live, with clear historical charts and market context
- API pricing starts at a genuinely free tier before paid plans begin at 29 dollars a month
- Broad coverage extends to DEX pairs, NFT collections and a Fear and Greed Index
What held it back
- Binance has owned CoinMarketCap outright since a 2020 acquisition reported near 400 million dollars
- Rankings still lean on exchange-reported volume, which is easier to inflate than an independently verified figure
- CoinGecko's Trust Score approach to exchange reliability is more transparent about its own methodology
- Circulating supply figures depend partly on self-reported project data rather than fully independent verification
Ask anyone new to crypto where they check a price and the answer is usually CoinMarketCap before it is anything else, a habit built over a decade that is worth examining rather than just assuming still holds up.
The coverage is genuinely enormous
The site now lists coverage running into the tens of millions of tracked coins, spanning over 900 centralized and decentralized exchanges and more than two million trading pairs. That scale is not just a vanity number: it means an obscure token launched last week on a small DEX is more likely to already have a page than not, with live price, volume and a chart pulled from wherever it actually trades. Pulling up Bitcoin's own page during testing showed live commentary about roughly 2.5 billion dollars in net outflows from major exchanges over a recent 48-hour window, sitting right alongside the price chart rather than buried in a separate news tab.
The rankings page, and the caveat that matters
CoinMarketCap explains its exchange rankings openly: exchanges are scored on traffic, liquidity, trading volume and confidence in the legitimacy of reported volume, with the site applying its own algorithms to filter out obvious wash trading before a rank is assigned. Pulling up the exchange rankings page, the top three by that measure were showing daily volumes in the billions, numbers large enough that even modest manipulation would be difficult to hide entirely. Still, the methodology depends heavily on what exchanges choose to report in the first place, and an exchange determined to inflate its numbers has more room to do so than a fully on-chain, independently auditable venue would allow.

Why the Binance ownership question will not go away
In 2020, Binance acquired CoinMarketCap outright in a deal reported at close to 400 million dollars, and the two companies issued a joint statement insisting they operate independently, with Binance having no bearing on CoinMarketCap's rankings. That statement has held up reasonably well in the years since: we did not find evidence during this review of Binance's own listings receiving obviously preferential ranking treatment. But the structural conflict of interest a competitor could raise back in 2020 has not disappeared just because nothing dramatic surfaced afterward, and anyone using CoinMarketCap to judge Binance specifically, or a Binance-listed token against a competitor's, should weigh that ownership before treating the numbers as neutral.
