CoinGecko review: enough free data for a daily reader, so who needs Premium

CoinGecko's own developer documentation opens with a number worth sitting with: over 1,500 exchanges and more than 18,000 coins, tracked and served without asking a casual reader to create an account or hand over a card. We spent a week checking prices, reading news through the site and pulling data through its public API to see where that free line actually ends.

What the free tier covers before you hit a wall

Browsing coin pages, checking market cap rankings, and reading the news feed cost nothing on CoinGecko, and none of it sat behind a login wall during our test. The category coverage runs to more than 600 groupings, which matters more than it sounds: sorting by narrative, like real-world assets or Layer 2 tokens, is how most daily readers actually browse rather than hunting one ticker at a time.

The developer documentation lists that same 18,000-plus coin figure alongside 1,500-plus exchanges as the baseline the whole product is built on, and every number we could independently check against the live site matched what the docs claimed. We treat that consistency as a good sign: a data provider that overstates its own coverage in its technical reference has no reason to, since developers relying on the figures would notice quickly.

CoinGecko's on-chain arm, GeckoTerminal, extends that same free access to decentralized exchange data across more than 200 blockchain networks and 1,800 DEXes, tracking upward of 39 million tokens. For a reader who wants to check a new token pair the moment it launches on a chain rather than waiting for it to reach a centralized listing, that free coverage is genuinely useful and something several paid competitors charge for.

The uptime record behind the free promise

Free data is only useful if it is actually there when you check it, so we looked at CoinGecko's own status page rather than taking the coverage claim at face value. All three public services it lists, the Pro API, the Public API and the GeckoTerminal API, showed 100 percent uptime across the last 60 days at the time we checked, with no outage bars in the history.

That track record is a reasonable reason to trust the free tier as a daily habit rather than a backup source you keep checking against something else. We could not reach the main coingecko.com pages through automated tools during this test, since the site returns errors to some bot traffic, which is a sign of aggressive filtering rather than a reliability problem for an actual visitor using a browser. A human loading the same pages through a regular browser hits none of that filtering, so treat it as evidence the operator takes scraping seriously, not as a mark against the product.
