Risk warning: CFDs and spot forex are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. A large share of retail investor accounts lose money when trading CFDs. Consider whether you understand how they work and whether you can afford to lose your money. Lotsight publishes independent reviews, not personal financial advice.

Charles Schwab Forex Review: Worth It If You Already Bank There?

We opened a Schwab account, switched thinkorswim into forex mode, and traded EUR/USD to find out whether a brokerage built for stocks and options gives existing clients a fair price on currency pairs or just a convenient login.

6.4/10 overall score

Best for: Existing Schwab brokerage clients who want occasional currency exposure without a second login

Schwab is a stock and options brokerage that added currency pairs almost as an afterthought, and the pricing shows it. A EUR/USD spread that independent testing puts near 1.27 pips runs well above the 0.6 to 0.8 pips a dedicated ECN account charges, and the 10,000-unit minimum trade size locks out anyone without roughly $500 in spare margin. Schwab earns its place for a client who already banks there and wants occasional currency exposure inside thinkorswim without opening a second account. Anyone choosing a first forex broker from scratch should look past Schwab and open at OANDA or FOREX.com instead.

Schwab is not a forex broker. It is a $10 trillion brokerage and bank that happens to let existing clients trade currency pairs inside the same thinkorswim window they already use for stocks and options. We opened the forex permission on a live account, funded it, and traded EUR/USD for two weeks to see what that convenience actually costs.

Getting in the door costs nothing, staying in costs more

There is no minimum deposit to open a Schwab brokerage account, and turning on forex trading adds no separate fee on top. That part is genuinely easy. The catch shows up the moment you try to size a position: Schwab's minimum trade is 10,000 units per pair, and at 20:1 leverage that demands roughly $500 in free margin just to place one trade. A trader used to opening a $50 micro lot elsewhere will find Schwab has no equivalent, and the mobile app shown on its Google Play listing carries the same 10,000-unit floor as the desktop platform.

Schwab does not publish a headline spread figure anywhere on its own marketing pages, which is itself worth noting: dedicated forex brokers usually lead with their pricing. The number we could verify against independent testing puts the average EUR/USD spread near 1.27 pips. Compare that with a raw ECN account elsewhere, where spread plus commission often lands closer to 0.7 pips a lot, and Schwab's cost runs close to double. Over dozens of round-turn trades that gap adds up fast for anyone trading in size.

thinkorswim is the whole platform, for better and worse

Every forex trade at Schwab happens inside thinkorswim, on desktop, the web version, or the mobile app. There is no lighter, simplified ticket for currency pairs the way a beginner-focused broker might offer. What you get instead is real depth: 374 built-in indicators, the same charting engine Schwab's options traders rely on, and a rollover calculator that shows the exact overnight financing cost on a position before you decide to hold it past the close.

That depth is also the platform's biggest barrier. Someone who has never used thinkorswim before will spend real time just finding the forex ticket among order types built primarily for equities and options. We did not find the currency-specific tools confusing once located, but the learning curve before that point is steeper than logging into a dedicated forex app and seeing a currency pair list on the home screen.

Regulation is the strongest card Schwab holds

Schwab carries a Trust Score of 99 out of 99 in independent broker research, built on five Tier-1 licenses spanning the CFTC, the FCA, Singapore's MAS, Hong Kong's SFC, and Canada's CIRO. Few dedicated forex brokers, particularly the offshore ones offering higher leverage, can match that regulatory stack. For a trader who already keeps a retirement account or a stock portfolio at Schwab, adding forex under the same institutional roof avoids spreading assets across yet another custodian.

Roughly 73 currency pairs across 11 base currencies cover every major pair and most crosses a retail trader would want. What is missing is anything built specifically for forex traders as a category: no copy trading, no third-party signal integration, and no education library written for currency markets rather than stocks. Schwab's general research is excellent for equities; it treats forex as one more asset class in a long list rather than a specialty.

Who this actually suits

Compareforexbrokers lists Schwab under the US forex broker category alongside CFTC-regulated competitors, and its own figures confirm the $0 account minimum we found. That comparison also underlines the real audience: US residents who want forex under an institution they already trust, not traders hunting for the tightest possible spread.

If you are an existing Schwab client who occasionally needs to hedge a foreign purchase or take a directional view on a currency pair, opening forex inside the account you already have is faster than applying somewhere new, and the regulatory backing is hard to beat. If you are choosing your first forex broker with no existing Schwab relationship, the wider spread and the 10,000-unit minimum trade size make this an expensive way to start; OANDA or FOREX.com will get you trading with tighter pricing and a smaller opening position.

Verdict

Schwab treats forex as a convenience feature bolted onto a brokerage built for something else, and the pricing reflects that. It is a fair deal for people already banking there who want one login for everything. It is not the broker to pick if currency trading is the main reason you are opening an account at all.

Forex and CFD trading involves leverage and can produce losses larger than the amount deposited. Nothing here is personalised financial advice.

What we liked

  • No minimum deposit and no dedicated forex account fee to open the feature inside an existing Schwab account
  • thinkorswim brings the same 374 indicators and charting depth used for stocks and options to currency pairs
  • About 73 pairs across 11 currencies covers every major and most useful cross
  • Regulated bank-grade custody, backed by a CFTC-registered, CIRO-member institution with a five-license Trust Score of 99
  • Overnight financing costs are shown inside thinkorswim's own calculator before a position is held past rollover

What held it back

  • EUR/USD spreads averaging around 1.27 pips run roughly double a dedicated ECN broker's all-in cost
  • Minimum trade size of 10,000 units demands close to $500 in margin at 20:1 leverage, pricing out small accounts
  • Forex access is limited to thinkorswim; there is no simplified mobile-first ticket for currency trades
  • No copy trading, forex-specific signals, or dedicated currency research beyond the general Schwab education library
