Shift Crypto's BitBox02 skips the flashy touchscreen and Bluetooth radio in favor of two buttons and a microSD backup. We tested the Bitcoin-only edition against the Multi edition to see which savers should actually pay CHF 149.
We plugged in a BitBox02 Bitcoin-only edition and a Multi edition for three weeks, moved real sats through both, and restored each from its microSD backup on a spare laptop. Shift Crypto, the Swiss company behind the device, sells both for the same CHF 149. The question we kept returning to was simple: does the Bitcoin-only version give up anything a saver needs, or does it just remove clutter?
Two editions, one price, one decision
Shift Crypto splits the BitBox02 into a Bitcoin-only edition and a Multi edition that adds Litecoin, Ethereum and ERC-20 tokens. Both editions ship in the same case, use the same ATECC608A secure element, and cost the same CHF 149. The difference lives entirely in firmware: the Bitcoin-only build removes every line of code that does not touch bitcoin, which shrinks what an attacker or an auditor has to read.
That split matters more than the marketing copy suggests. A device that only ever needs to parse bitcoin transactions has fewer parsers to exploit, and Shift Crypto has leaned into that argument for years rather than chasing every new chain the way some competitors do. If your holdings are bitcoin and nothing else, that narrower firmware is a real security gain, not a marketing footnote.
Setup runs through a companion app, not the device
There is no seed phrase written on paper here by default. Instead, the BitBox02 backs itself up to a microSD card slotted into the device itself, encrypted with a code you set during setup. We tested a full wipe-and-restore from that card twice and it worked cleanly both times, quicker than typing 24 words back into a recovery tool. You can still generate a standard 12 or 24-word phrase as a second backup, and we would recommend keeping both.
