Alpari review: a quarter-century brand running on an offshore licence

Alpari still advertises the name it built in the 2000s, but the entity taking your deposit today is licensed in Comoros, not London. We opened a Standard account, checked the spreads and pulled our money out to see what changed.

Our verdict

Alpari's execution and platform choice are fine for a small offshore account, but the Comoros MISA licence replaced the FCA and CySEC registrations that once backed the name, and that gap in protection is the whole story now.

Best for Traders who already accept offshore risk and want cheap ECN pricing on MT4 or MT5

CFDs are complex instruments and carry a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. Most retail accounts lose money.

Alpari homepage headline reading Alpari is your gateway to global opportunity, with an illustration of a man leaping between buildings

Alpari has been advertising forex trading since 1998, and the name still carries weight with traders who remember its old FCA-regulated UK arm. That arm is gone. It collapsed in January 2015 when the Swiss National Bank scrapped the franc's euro peg and wiped out Alpari UK's capital overnight. The brand survived, but under a different flag, and the licence backing your deposit today looks nothing like the one that failed then. We opened, funded and traded a live account under that current flag to find out what, if anything, that history still costs a new client.

Who is actually holding your money

We opened a live Standard account through alpari.com and the onboarding funnel routes new clients to Parlance Trading Ltd, licensed by Comoros MISA. There is no FCA number on the account agreement, no CySEC number, nothing from a regulator with a compensation scheme behind it. Comoros oversight is thin: it registers the entity and does little ongoing supervision beyond that. Malaysia's Securities Commission has placed Alpari on its investor alert list for operating without local authorization, and Indonesia's BAPPEBTI has blocked its domains outright. Neither warning stops you from opening an account from most other countries, but both tell you what two national regulators concluded after looking at the same offer we tested.

Four account tiers, one platform pair

Alpari runs four live tiers, all reachable on MetaTrader 4 or MetaTrader 5 with no in-house platform to learn.

The account comparison grid on alpari.com
  • Micro: $30 minimum, leverage to 1:500, spreads from 1.2 pips, no commission.

  • Standard: $100 minimum, leverage to 1:1000, spreads from 1.2 pips, no commission.

  • ECN: $300 minimum, leverage to 1:3000, spreads from 0.8 pips, no commission.

  • Pro ECN: $500 minimum, leverage to 1:3000, spreads from 0.0 pips, $2.5 per lot on forex.

We funded the Standard tier with $100 and watched EUR/USD spreads sit close to the advertised 1.2 pips through the London session, widening past 2 pips around the New York open on a Friday, which matches what several independent comparison sites have logged over the past year.

The Pro ECN tier is the one worth the extra deposit if you trade often. Zero-pip spreads plus a flat commission beat a marked-up spread on anything but a tiny account, and 1:3000 leverage is high enough that margin is rarely the constraint; the risk sits elsewhere.

MetaTrader, nothing homegrown

Alpari does not build its own platform. You trade through MT4 or MT5, both offered on desktop, web and mobile, which means every indicator, expert advisor and broker-comparison tool built for MetaTrader works here without modification.

Alpari's platform selection page

That is a plus for anyone who already has MT4 scripts or a trading journal built around it, and a non-event for anyone who does not, since dozens of other brokers offer the identical pair. Order execution on our test trades landed within a second on both platforms, market execution rather than instant, which matches what Alpari states in its order execution policy and did not surprise us once we saw the spread widening during news releases.

Withdrawals: not the fast lane

We requested a withdrawal through the account's card method and it cleared in four business days, in line with the delays that recur across independent complaint boards. Card and bank wire withdrawals move at a normal pace once approved, but support response times on disputed withdrawals are the recurring complaint we found repeated across nearly a hundred logged cases on WikiFX, covering claims from failed withdrawals to platform manipulation. We cannot verify each individual complaint, but the volume and consistency of the pattern is itself a data point.

Verdict

Alpari's mechanics work: the platforms are standard, the ECN pricing is genuinely competitive, and a $30 entry point is low enough to try without committing real money you would miss. What has changed is who backs the account. This is a Comoros-licensed offshore broker wearing a brand built under UK regulation that no longer exists, and that distinction matters more than any spread number on this page. Traders who already accept offshore counterparty risk and want cheap ECN execution on familiar software will find nothing broken here. Traders who need a regulator with real enforcement power and a deposit protection scheme behind their money should look at brokers still holding FCA, ASIC or CySEC licences, not the ones that used to.

What we liked

  • ECN account spreads from 0.0 pips with a flat $2.5-per-lot commission
  • Leverage up to 1:3000 on the ECN and Pro ECN tiers
  • MT4 and MT5 both offered natively, no third-party wrapper
  • Micro account opens with $30, low enough to test the broker properly

What held it back

  • Current entity, Parlance Trading Ltd, is licensed only by Comoros MISA, not FCA or CySEC
  • Alpari UK collapsed in 2015 during the Swiss franc crisis, and the brand never returned to tier-one regulation
  • Malaysia's Securities Commission and Indonesia's BAPPEBTI have both issued public warnings against it
  • Standard account spreads from 1.2 pips are wide next to ECN-only competitors
