ActivTrades review: is spread betting here actually safe for UK traders?
We opened an ActivTrades spread betting account with no minimum deposit, traded forex CFDs and spread bets side by side, and checked the broker's negative balance protection and FCA standing against what UK traders actually need before risking a live account.
Our verdict
ActivTrades earns its safety reputation honestly. Negative balance protection applies to every account by policy, backed by a separate Lloyd's of London insurance layer most competitors do not disclose this clearly. Spread betting profits stay tax-free for UK residents, and forex spreads started from 0.5 pips in our testing, fair though not the tightest we have seen. The account suits a UK trader who wants tax-free profits and a documented safety net without chasing the absolute lowest spread, and it is a poor match for anyone whose only priority is raw cost per lot.
Best for UK traders wanting tax-free profits and documented balance insurance over the lowest spread

CFDs are complex instruments and carry a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. Most retail accounts lose money.
Spread betting only works for a UK trader if the broker behind it is still standing the day a position needs paying out. ActivTrades has been regulated since 2001, which put the safety question first on our list before we even looked at spreads.
Negative balance protection, checked against the policy wording
Every ActivTrades account carries negative balance protection, meaning a client cannot owe the broker money even after a sharp overnight move against an open position. That policy has been in place since 2013, and ActivTrades backs it with a second layer: insurance underwritten at Lloyd's of London, on top of the standard client fund segregation. Combined, the broker states cover of up to £1,000,000 in excess of the FSCS-style protection most UK brokers rely on alone. We could not find another broker on our list disclosing a comparable named insurance layer this clearly, and that specificity is what separates a real guarantee from a marketing line.
The tax argument, and where it stops applying
Spread betting profits are tax-free for UK residents, and ActivTrades states plainly that no stamp duty applies either. That is a genuine advantage over a standard CFD account, where the same profit would be taxable. The catch sits outside the broker's control: spread betting is a UK and Ireland-specific product, tied to how those two countries treat the wager rather than the trade. A UK trader who later moves abroad loses the tax treatment regardless of which broker they use, so the benefit is worth weighing against how settled that trader's residency actually is.
What our spreads looked like against the claim
ActivTrades advertises forex CFD spreads from 0.5 pips, and our test trades on EUR/USD landed close to that floor during normal market hours. That is a fair number, not a remarkable one. Several ECN-style brokers elsewhere on this list quote 0.0 pips plus a commission, which can undercut ActivTrades on raw cost per lot once volume climbs. For a spread betting account specifically, though, that comparison matters less: a trader choosing spread betting is usually optimising for the tax treatment first and the spread second, and 0.5 pips is not a number that should change that decision on its own.
Four platforms, one account
ActivTrades gives a single account access to ActivTrader, MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5 and TradingView, without forcing a choice at sign-up. We moved a position between ActivTrader and TradingView mid-test without needing to open a second account, which is more platform flexibility than most brokers offering spread betting provide. Execution speed is advertised at under 0.004 seconds on average, and while we cannot independently verify a number that granular, we saw no requotes across our test trades, which is the practical thing a trader actually notices.
Where the site makes you work for the answer
One real friction point: ActivTrades does not publish a single combined fee schedule that covers spreads, overnight financing and any account-specific charges in one table. We had to check the spread betting page, the individual account page and a help centre article separately to build a complete cost picture. None of the individual numbers were hidden, but the lack of one summary page is a real inconvenience next to brokers that put everything on one fees table.
Who should actually open this account
A UK resident already comfortable with spread betting terminology, and looking for a broker that documents its safety net rather than just claiming one, is the clearest fit here. So is a trader who values platform choice: moving freely between ActivTrader, MetaTrader and TradingView without opening a second account saved us real time during testing, and that flexibility is rarer than it should be among brokers offering spread betting specifically. Someone new to spread betting altogether should still read the mechanics carefully before funding, since betting per point on a price move behaves differently from buying a CFD contract even when the underlying market is the same.
A trader who has already decided cost per lot is the only variable that matters should look at a dedicated ECN account elsewhere on our list instead. ActivTrades is not built to win a pure spread comparison, and it does not need to: the tax treatment and the insurance layer are doing the work that the spread number is not.
Our verdict
ActivTrades is a genuinely safe choice for a UK spread betting account, and it earns that description with specifics rather than a badge: a named insurance layer at Lloyd's, a protection policy dated to 2013, and tax-free profits confirmed in plain language. Spreads from 0.5 pips are fair rather than exceptional, and a trader optimising purely for the lowest cost per lot will find cheaper ECN accounts elsewhere. For a UK resident who wants the tax advantage and a documented safety net without hunting through separate pages for the fee breakdown, ActivTrades is a solid, if not spectacular, place to hold that account.
What we liked
- Negative balance protection applies to every account, backed by a separate Lloyd's of London insurance layer since 2013
- Spread betting profits are tax-free for UK residents, with no separate stamp duty on positions
- No minimum deposit required to open a spread betting account
- Four platforms available on one account: ActivTrader, MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5 and TradingView
What held it back
- Forex CFD spreads start from 0.5 pips, wider than the 0.0 pip raw pricing several ECN brokers advertise
- Spread betting is a UK/Ireland-specific product, so the tax advantage does not travel with a trader who relocates
- The broker's own site does not publish a single combined fee schedule; charges are spread across several pages
- No dedicated cent or micro account for a trader who wants to start smaller than a full spread betting position
