3Commas Review: Do the DCA and Grid Bots Earn the Subscription?

We connected a trade-only API key from a live exchange account to 3Commas, built a DCA bot and a grid bot on the free tier, then moved through the paid plans to see what each tier actually unlocks. The question we kept coming back to was simple: does the automation save more than the subscription costs, and does handing an exchange key to a third party carry a risk worth knowing about first.

What the bots actually automate

A DCA bot buys in steps as a price falls, averaging your entry instead of committing everything at once, and 3Commas layers technical indicators or TradingView webhook signals on top so the bot can wait for a trigger rather than buying blindly (3commas.io/dca-bots). The grid bot does the opposite job: it places a ladder of buy and sell orders across a price range and profits from the market moving sideways, which is exactly the condition where a simple buy-and-hold strategy earns nothing.

Both bots ran on our test account without surprises. Orders filled where the settings said they would, and the backtest tool let us replay a strategy against past price data before committing real funds, which is the closest thing to a dry run a retail bot platform offers. That backtest is a simulation, though, and it cannot see order book depth or partial fills the way a live market does, so treat a strong backtest as a reason to size a position small, not as a guarantee.

The subscription math a small account has to do

3Commas' current pricing page lists three paid tiers: Starter at $15 a month, Pro at $20, and Expert at $60 (3commas.io/pricing). Starter caps you at five DCA bots and two grid bots, which sounds generous until you realize a single multi-pair strategy can eat that ceiling fast. Pro raises the bot count and backtest limits, and Expert adds futures access alongside the highest ceilings, but at $60 a month that plan needs a meaningful account balance before the fee stops being the biggest line item in your return.

Run the numbers before you subscribe. A $60 monthly Expert plan against a $2,000 account is a 3% monthly cost floor before a single trade turns a profit, and that math does not improve just because the bot is well built. The free tier, which includes one live DCA bot and one grid bot, is the right place to learn the mechanics before paying anything.
