Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream Review: Nice Cream, Expensive Habit
Kiehl's best seller packs 4.5% squalane, glacial glycoprotein and pro-ceramides into a light, fragrance-free cream from $39. It feels lovely on dry skin, but breakout-prone faces report trouble, and a ceramide cream at a third of the price does the same basic job.
Our verdict
A pleasant, light, fragrance-free daily moisturizer that is easy to like on dry or normal skin. It is not better enough than a drugstore ceramide cream to justify three times the price per ounce, and some oily or acne-prone users report breakouts. Buy it if you enjoy the texture and the budget allows; otherwise start cheaper.
Best forDry to normal skin that wants a light, fragrance-free daily cream
What we liked
- Light, non-greasy texture that absorbs quickly and layers without pilling
- 4.5% squalane with glycerin and pro-ceramides supports hydration
- Fragrance-free and suitable across most skin types by the brand's account
- Wide size range, from small travel jars to large pots
What held it back
- Costs several times more per ounce than a drugstore ceramide cream
- Contains waxy emollients that one tester linked to breakouts
- Some buyers report the formula has changed in texture and effect
- Hydration claims of 72 hours are brand-run, not independent
Kiehl's calls it the number one face cream, and for a generation of department-store shoppers it has been the default answer to "what moisturizer should I buy". We looked at whether the answer still holds when a well-known ceramide tub sits a few aisles over at a fraction of the price. Our short answer: the Kiehl's cream is nicer to use, but not three times better.
We did not run our own trial. We compared Kiehl's published claims with an independent skin-analyzer trial at Mamabella, retailer listings, and the ingredient comparison with CeraVe, then weighed all of it.

What the jar says
The current formula leads with 4.5% squalane, glacial glycoprotein and pro-ceramides. Kiehl's says it delivers 72-hour hydration and hydrates 15 layers deep, and describes the cream as lightweight, fragrance-free and paraben-free. Those are brand claims from brand-run testing, so treat them as marketing until another lab repeats them.
