Dyson Airwrap i.d. Review: Does the App Make Curling Easier?
Dyson's first connected styler stores a curl sequence built from six questions about your hair. It removes guesswork from a $599.99 tool that rewards technique, but it cannot change what your hair will hold.
Our verdict
The i.d. is the easiest Airwrap to curl with: the app builds a timed wrap, curl and cool-shot sequence for your hair and stores it on the tool. It is still a $599.99 styler whose results depend on hair type and technique. Buy it if you curl often and found the original fiddly. Skip it if you rarely curl.
Best forRegular curlers who want guided, repeatable timings
What we liked
- i.d.curl sequence stored on the tool, so no phone is needed after setup
- Six attachments for curling, smoothing, volume and fast drying
- Hair profile built from six questions about type and length
- Separate Curly+Coily version with a conical barrel and diffuser
What held it back
- $599.99 costs far more than rivals such as the Shark FlexStyle
- Still needs practice for sectioning and direction of wrap
- App and Bluetooth add a setup step plain stylers do not have
- Curl longevity claims carry a footnote and vary with hair type
The original Airwrap had one real problem, and it was not the price. It was the learning curve: which way to feed the hair, how long to hold, when to release. The i.d. tries to fix that with a phone app and a switch. So the question for a $599.99 tool is simple. Does guided curling change your results, or does it only change how confident you feel?
We did not test this over weeks. What follows draws on Dyson's own pages, the launch details, and two independent reviews, TechRadar's and Tom's Guide's, with our own read of where the idea helps and where it stops.
What the app actually adds
Everything else about the tool is familiar Airwrap: air flowing around a barrel so wet or damp hair wraps itself, with controlled heat rather than a hot plate. The new part is Bluetooth. You pair the styler with the MyDyson app and answer six questions about your hair type and length. The app then generates an i.d.curl sequence with personalised timings for wrapping, curling and the cool shot.
