Independent cosmetics research

We read the whole ingredient list, then we score the brand.

54 cosmetics houses — skincare, colour, hair and fragrance — put through the same five-part assessment. The ranking below is the whole point of this site, so it sits above everything else.

Beauty of Joseon review

8.6/10OutstandingK-Beauty & J-Beauty$12–$26

Relief Sun is the single best argument for buying Korean sunscreen, and it costs about eighteen dollars. The rest of the range is quietly excellent too.

Relief Sun Rice + Probiotics is the best mass-market sunscreen we have used and it costs a third of its Western equivalents. The rest of the range — ginseng, rice, propolis — is consistently well made and consistently cheap. This is the best value in this category.

Maison Francis Kurkdjian review

8.5/10StrongFragrance Houses$125–$495

Francis Kurkdjian is one of the best working perfumers alive, and his house is the rare niche brand where the person on the bottle actually composed what is inside it.

The most technically accomplished house in this category. Baccarat Rouge 540 deserves its reputation and is also the least interesting reason to shop here — Aqua Universalis and Grand Soir are better fragrances that fewer people wear.

Fenty Beauty review

8.6/10OutstandingMakeup Brands$20–$42

Fenty did not invent inclusive shade ranges; it made them non-negotiable. Eight years on, the question is whether the formulas are as good as the principle.

The most important makeup launch of the last decade and still the benchmark for shade range. The complexion formulas have held up, Gloss Bomb is a genuinely great product, and the brand has resisted the temptation to dilute what made it matter.

Merit Beauty review

Merit sells subtraction: twenty-four makeup products, no glitter, no launch treadmill, one five-minute routine. The discipline is real and the Flush Balm is excellent. Then you reach the bundle page and find thirty near-identical sets named after people.

Color Wow review

Dream Coat is one of the few haircare products of the last decade that does something genuinely new, and its sixteen-ingredient list explains exactly how. The rest of the catalogue is a permanent sale rack built around it.

Tatcha review

Tatcha publishes its full ingredient lists, which is more than most of this price bracket manages. Read them and you find a very good silicone-and-rice-ferment gel, a trademark doing the heavy lifting, and colloidal gold at position eleven.

Drugstore & Value7.3/10

BYOMA review

BYOMA sells the skin-barrier argument in highlighter pink at drugstore money, and the cheap end of the range is genuinely well made. The trouble is that everything it added on top of the idea is the part that does not hold up.

The rubric

Five criteria, published weights, no exceptions.

A brand cannot buy its way up this list, and a favourite cannot coast on goodwill. Every house is marked against the same five headings and the arithmetic is the arithmetic.
