Zero XB: 139 lb and $4,395 — the cheap Zero that is still a Zero

At 139 lb and $4,395, the XB is less than half the weight and less than half the price of Zero's road bikes. It is also the first one a nervous rider could pick up.

In short

The XB is the most interesting thing Zero has done in years: a 139 lb motorcycle with 275 lb-ft at the rear wheel for $4,395. It tops out at 50 mph, so it is a town bike and nothing else — but as a town bike it undercuts everything else Zero sells by six thousand dollars.

What you get

  • 139 lb curb weight — light enough to manhandle in a car park
  • $4,395 is less than half the price of the FXE
  • 275 lb-ft at the rear wheel makes it quick away from lights
  • A Zero, with Zero's dealer network, at a moped price

What you give up

  • 50 mph top speed rules out dual carriageways and motorways
  • A light bike is a less settled bike at speed and in crosswinds
  • Zero publishes little range detail on the model page itself

Weight is the specification riders notice last and regret first. It decides whether you can pick the bike up, whether you can push it backwards out of a parking space, and whether a slow-speed wobble ends in embarrassment or a bill.

Zero's road motorcycles weigh around 300 lb. The XB weighs 139 lb. That is not a smaller motorcycle; it is a different kind of object.

A 139 lb motorcycle is a different experience

At this weight, the physics stop working against you. A rider who has to tiptoe a 300 lb bike out of a garage can walk the XB out one-handed. Dropping it at walking pace becomes a scuff rather than a repair.

It also means the 275 lb-ft measured at the rear wheel has very little mass to move. The XB is not a fast motorcycle by top speed, but it is a brisk one away from a standstill, which is where town riding is actually decided.

  • 139 lb curb weight — roughly the weight of two large electric scooters.

  • 50 mph top speed: town roads and B-roads, not motorways.

  • 275 lb-ft at the rear wheel, available instantly.

  • $4,395, against $10,495 for the next bike up the range.

The XB is the first Zero whose price sits in the same conversation as a moped — and the only one you could lift into a van without help.

The 50 mph ceiling is the whole trade

Everything the XB does well comes from being small and light, and the cost of being small and light is a 50 mph limit. That rules out motorways, and on a fast dual carriageway it would leave you exposed.

If your riding is a five-to-fifteen mile hop across a city, the ceiling never comes up. If it is a commute that includes a stretch of fast road, this is the wrong bike and the FXE is the right one.

Who it is for

New riders, and experienced riders who want a cheap second machine for short trips. The XB removes the two things that put people off motorcycles — weight and price — without dropping them into the world of unbranded imports.

It is not a do-everything bike, and Zero does not pretend it is. Read the 50 mph figure as a boundary, not a disappointment, and the XB is the best value in the range.
