Try something. Carry a 20-litre water container up two flights of stairs. That is what carrying an ordinary electric scooter feels like.
Now carry a 12-litre one. That is the KQi Air.
Why weight is the most important specification on a scooter
An electric scooter is bought to solve the last mile. In most cases that last mile attaches to something else: a train, a bus, or a car boot.

And in every one of those scenarios, you have to lift the scooter.
Up the steps at a station, usually without a lift.
Into a car boot, at hip height.
Up three steps into a building lobby.
Into a shared lift, among other people.
An 18 kg machine turns every one of those into hard work. After two weeks, people start finding reasons not to bring the scooter. After two months, the scooter lives in a cupboard.
11.7 kg is below that threshold. It is the weight of a full cabin suitcase — something people wheel and lift across airports without a thought.
The best scooter is the one you are still using in month six. Weight decides that more than any other specification.
Light and still 50 km: the hard part
Normally, cutting weight means cutting battery, and cutting battery means cutting range. The KQi Air claims 50 km — only 10 km less than the heavier KQi 300.
That says two things. First, the weight was taken out of the frame and the mechanical parts, not out of the pack. Second, a lighter machine needs less energy for the same distance — the benefit compounds.
NIU also did not delete the suspension to save weight, which plenty of brands do on “ultralight” models. That deserves credit: a light scooter without suspension rides appallingly, because mass is itself what absorbs vibration.
Two versions, and one number to ask about
NIU offers two versions: the KQi Air X at 11.7 kg and the KQi Air at 11.9 kg. Those 200 grams almost certainly sit in frame material or equipment, and it is worth asking what each version includes before choosing.
The number the product page does not state clearly, and that you must ask for: the maximum payload. Ultralight machines usually have lower load limits, and for an 85 kg rider with a backpack that is the deciding figure.
Where the weight was cut: three places a brand can take it from
When a maker publishes an unusually low weight, the right question is what they removed. There are three usual places, and each has a different consequence.
Cut from the battery. The easiest and the worst. A small pack means short range. The KQi Air did not cut here — 50 km is close to the heavier KQi 300.
Cut from the suspension. Common on cheap ultralight models. Deleting the suspension saves a few kilograms and turns the machine into punishment on bad surfaces. NIU kept the suspension.
Cut from the frame and materials. The most expensive place to cut, because it demands a better alloy or a cleverer frame design. This is almost certainly where the KQi Air found most of its weight.
The consequence of cutting in that third place: the machine costs more, and the payload is usually lower. Which is why we press the point about asking for the payload figure above.
The downside of being light
At 32 km/h an 11.7 kg machine feels noticeably lighter in the hands than an 18 kg one. Crosswinds push it harder, and crossing wet paint it loses grip more easily.
That is not a design fault but a consequence of physics. The answer: slow down where the surface is uncertain, and do not expect the planted feel of a 25 kg performance scooter.
The verdict
We score it 8.6 — the highest of the scooter group. Not because the KQi Air has the strongest numbers, but because it solves the actual problem that causes most scooters to be abandoned.
As with every NIU, the caveat is distribution: the brand sells directly in some markets and not at all in others.
