On the KQi 300 product page, NIU lists four specifications in order. The first is not speed, and not range, but twin hydraulic suspension.
That order is not accidental, and it is right.
Why suspension is the deciding feature on a scooter
An electric scooter's wheels are about 25 cm across. A motorbike's are twice that. Faced with the same pothole, the small wheel drops deeper and hits the far edge harder.
With no suspension, that entire impact goes straight up through the deck into your knees, and through the bars into your wrists. After two weeks of commuting over broken tarmac, that is the real reason so many scooters end up in a corner of the hall.
Most mid-range scooters use a single coil spring, or nothing. Twin hydraulics — meaning damping oil, not just a spring — are premium hardware. The difference: a spring gives the energy back to you as bounce; oil absorbs it and turns it into heat.
The shop test: stand on the scooter and push down hard once. If it bounces up and down a few times, that is an undamped spring. If it compresses, returns once and stops, that is real damping.
38 km/h: fast, and worth reading carefully
A top speed of 38 km/h is considerably above the 25 km/h most urban scooters are limited to.
In Europe and many US states, 25 km/h is the legal threshold for a scooter to use cycle infrastructure. Above 25 km/h the machine falls into a different class, with different rules on registration and where it may be ridden.
Some jurisdictions are still writing their rules for standing electric scooters. Which means: assume nothing. Check the current regulations before you buy, and especially before you ride in heavy traffic.
In practical terms, 38 km/h is useful: it lets you keep pace with traffic on side streets rather than being squeezed into the gutter. But it also means the brakes and the suspension have to match — which is exactly why NIU puts the suspension at the top of the list.
60 km, and how a scooter differs from a motorbike
Range of up to 60 km. That sounds modest if you have just read a review of an electric motorbike claiming 280 km. But scooters do not compete with motorbikes.
A scooter solves the last mile: home to the bus stop, car park to office, station to work. Those legs are 2 to 6 km. At 60 km you charge once a week.
What changes the maths is deciding to replace a motorbike with a scooter for a full 15 km commute each way. Then 60 km is two days, and you will be charging constantly — a usage pattern that ages a pack far faster.
NIU and software
NIU's consistent strength is its app. On the motorbike range, it tracks location, pack health and trip history, and warns you if the machine is moved. The KQi line inherits that platform.
On a device as easily stolen as a scooter, location tracking and a remote lock are not decorative features.
Three parts that will wear out, and the order they do it in
An electric scooter has fewer moving parts than a bicycle, but they work in harsher conditions: close to the road, in dust and water.
In the order they actually appear:
Tyres. Small wheels turn faster to cover the same distance, so they wear faster. On a daily machine, plan on new tyres after about a year.
Brake pads. Urban scooters stop constantly. Disc pads wear faster on an electric machine because weight shifts rearwards under braking.
Fork seals. This one belongs to machines with hydraulic suspension. Oil seals harden with age and start to weep. The sign: an oily streak down the fork leg.
That third item is the price of good suspension. A scooter without suspension never has this problem — but it also tires your wrists every day.
Where to buy it
NIU lists a long line of markets on its global site, and the list differs by region. Where NIU has no presence, machines arrive as grey imports with no manufacturer warranty.
We score it 8.4. This is the most balanced scooter in the series, and the only mark against it belongs to distribution rather than to the machine.
